In a remarkable 2015 campaign, new Offaly boss Kelly masterminded promotion to Division 1B of the Allianz League and Christy Ring Cup glory, ensuring that Kerry will return to the All-Ireland senior hurling championship, via the Leinster round-robin series.
The hole left by Kelly will be filled by former Limerick star Carey, a veteran of two Munster Championships and three All-Stars as a player.
He also scored this iconic winning point against Clare in the 1996 Munster senior hurling championship, a score that ended the Banner County’s reign as provincial and All-Ireland kingpins:
Carey has also had two separate spells in charge of his native Limerick’s U21s and he also worked as a selector under former senior boss Donal O’Grady.
This year, Carey was in charge of the Patrickswell team narrowly beaten by Na Piarsaigh in the Limerick SHC final.
Carey will announce his management team at a later date, a Kerry statement revealed.
