15-year-old Ciara Ginty wins world boxing gold for Ireland

Watch your back, Katie — Ciara Ginty is world junior champion.

IRISH BOXING HAS a new golden girl.

Mayo’s Ciara Ginty was crowned lightweight champion at the AIBA World Youth and Junior Championships today.

The 15-year-old, who boxes out of Geesala BC, beat Turkey’s Esra Yildiz on Turkey on a split decision to win the 60kg junior gold.

This morning’s win was Ginty’s fourth in five days following unanimous victories against Chinese, Ukranian and Kazakh opposition in Albena, Bulgaria.

And a good week for the Irish team could get even better when Cork’s Christina Desmond fights for gold in the youth 69kg final later this afternoon.

Desmond is due in the ring at around 4.3opm to face Kazakhstan’s Gauhar Yermekbay.

Mayo’s Jacqui Lynch collected her bronze medal this morning. Lynch was beaten in the semi-finals of the junior light-flyweight division.
