IRISH SHOWJUMPER Cian O’Connor will compete in today’s Olympic final, after he was given a late call-up this morning.
The Co Meath rider narrowly missed out on a spot in the decider when his horse Blue Loyd hit three fences in qualifying, leaving them in the first reserve spot.
Sweden’s Rolf Goran Bengston on Cassal has now pulled out, meaning O’Connor — who won and then lost gold in Athens eight years ago with Waterford Crystal — is back in the final.
“We are in the final!! One horse has withdrawn this morning so we are in! First to go though!” O’Connor tweeted in the last hour, though he is in fact scheduled to second according to the official website. The event begins at noon.
