MANCHESTER UNITED SIGNED Christian Eriksen on Friday with the Denmark midfielder arriving at Old Trafford as a free agent on a three-year deal.
The 30-year-old’s switch to the Red Devils completes an incredible return after his brush with death last year.
Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch in Copenhagen while playing for Denmark at the European Championship and was forced to leave Inter Milan after recovering due to Serie A health regulations.
Eriksen, fitted with a implantable cardioverter defibrillator, proved his form and fitness during a loan spell at Brentford in the second half of last season.
He played 11 times in the Premier League for the Bees, scoring once and providing four assists.
“Manchester United is a special club, and I cannot wait to get started,” said Eriksen.
“I have had the privilege of playing at Old Trafford many times but to do it in the red shirt of United will be an amazing feeling.”
Eriksen has experience of working with United manager Erik Ten Hag after training with Ajax as part of his return to football following the cardiac arrest.
Ten Hag, who took charge at United in the close-season after leaving the Dutch champions, is looking to revamp his new team after they finished a disappointing sixth in the Premier League last term.
“I have seen Erik’s work at Ajax and know the level of detail and preparation that he and his staff put into every day. It is clear that he is a fantastic coach,” added Eriksen.
“Having spoken with him and learned more about his vision and the way he wants the team to play, I am even more excited for the future.
“I still have major ambitions in the game, there is a huge amount that I know I can achieve, and this is the perfect place to continue my journey.”
Eriksen is Ten Hag’s second signing after the arrival of Netherlands left-back Tyrell Malacia from Feyenoord.
They are also expected to complete the signing of Argentinian defender Lisandro Martinez from Ajax, while they are understood to have agreed terms with Barcelona over the transfer of midfielder Frenkie de Jong, although the Dutchman is yet to agree personal terms with the club.
Good signing for united.
@Brian Dunne: definitely Brian, improves that midfield big time.
@Brian Dunne: I’m not so sure. Are united building a team by buying a 30 year old midfielder? Eriksen was a good player, dont get me wrong but when you look at what chelsea have done it the last week it doesnt even compare
@Paddy Kavanagh: buying sterling? They are signing koulibaly at 31?and have silva as cb at 37.
@Pauly Kel: some lads should fact check before posting on here
@Brian Dunne: Should united not be buying the likes of Haaland..thats all im saying
@Paddy Kavanagh: City will hardly sell him paddy, he is only after joining them! All jokes aside I get your point but with the way the new manager will want to play he should be a good signing for united. Hopefully martial and Rushford get back to form under ten haag.
@Paddy Kavanagh: well they’ve bought a young full back, have a young centre half coming in. I don’t see any harm in signing a proven 30 yr old? Young savage and iqbal look very decent prospects too.
@Ger: United are one of the richest football clubs in the world.. but yet they cant sign anyone of note.. makes you wonder
@Paddy Kavanagh: Utd have got an experience , especially PL experience, player for free. in his time Ferguson signed teddy sherinham and a few other ‘older’ players to help improve a young squad. Klopp got Milner on a free. Chelsea Silva I could go on. He will be a good voice in a dressing room, and if it doesn’t work out, again he has cost them nothing.
@Cormac Flanagan: I Can’t see united challenging for top 4 with the current squad. simple as that. Spurs, Chelsea and even arsenal look better. Hoping rashford and martial come good is laughable. Ronaldo is gone out the gap
@Paddy Kavanagh: probably not having champions league football will go against them I would imagine.. they may be one of the richest clubs in the world but the people who run united haven’t got the team winning trophies as number 1 priority, although united have spent alot of money in recent seasons with little return from it
@Paddy Kavanagh: still haven’t answered?what have Chelsea done the last week apart from signing sterling? They are signing a 31 year old cb to play alongside their 37 year old cb is that building too??
@Paddy Kavanagh: really. Nearly the same squad, with a ‘PE Teacher’ have got in top 4 twice in last three years. Utd had their worst season in living memory last year and were in contention for top 4 with 3/4 games to go. Pool and city will prob be top 2, next two spots will be between Spurs(have CL to distract), Chelsea(CL distraction and who knows how’ll they’ll perform), Arsenal (Who’s knows which Arsenal will we see this year) Utd and there’s always a surprise team up there.
@Pauly Kel: doesn’t take much to set you off does it…tut tut!
@Damien Leen: ah damo, says ya man that had a mare about McIlroy. Tut tut.
@Pauly Kel: he’s a sad act that lad, he’s on more united articles than pool ones, not much going on I’d imagine
@Colm Winters:exactly.he is the 42′s regular utd commentator.
@Paddy Kavanagh: What are you on about? So because united couldn’t sign Haaland, they should just overlook an absolute value signing that is Eriksen? That makes no sense. Then you say they’re the richest club in the world, United of all clubs have proven that money doesn’t buy you success. United are not in the champions league or contending for titles, so they have to grind their way back to the top by finding value signings like this. Unless you’re throwing stupid money at players, which again does not work. Of all the bad signings United have made over the years, this is not one of them!
@Pauly Kel: still bleating about someone’s opinion about Rory, Jesus man get over it.
@Colm Winters: getting to you am I…Good…so…looking forward to the season are ya…I wouldn’t be if I were you…actually chalk off the nx few seasons I’d say, sate of Utd…ye will stay up though, hope so, handy 6 points for us and improve our goal difference ;-)
@Damien Leen: Damien Damien Damien. You are truly obsessed over utd lad. Not healthy..
@Damien Leen: embarrassing
@Damien Leen: you ever going to chip into an actual conversation about sport or just chip away talking tripe??
@Paddy Kavanagh: being one of the richest clubs in the world is enough to get players? Seriously? I’m a United fan but we’re not currently a top side. We’ve just had one of our worst seasons. We’re not in the champions league. We finished the season dying for it to end as a broken team. We have been “rebuilding the team” for 9 years. It’s about a lot more than throwing money at the problem.
A big thanks to Brentford who took a chance on him and gave him a way back .
Highly rated player. It’s the start of a rebuild and he’s exactly the kind of player Utd need imo
Signing of the season
Hon christy lad.
@A$AP Ragnick: Hopefully they let him take it if they get a free or penalty.
@Ultan Corcoran: united get more penalties than anyone. He will be grand
@Shane Lad: twas a My Left Foot joke tbf
@Shane Lad: Strange comment. Utd were awarded 5 last year in the PL. Liverpool and Arsenal 8, Chelsea and Man City 9. Is it the Sun you read for your stats???
Exactly what United need, a proper ball player, and will understand exactly what Ten Hag wants from him. He’s got a portfolio of passes, knows the pace and the rough n tumble of the Prem. Reminds me of signing Van Der Sar or indeed Larson in the twilight of their career’s. Worked out pretty damn good as far as I remember.
@Nigel McDonagh: he’s 30, not 34. He’s hardly in the twilight of his career yet.
We were told united require a midfielder with a huge ability to work hard and they sign a 30 year old with a dodgy heart…..bless em!
@Seamus Kelly: He’s a highly experienced proven top level and international midfielder with huge ability and 30 is relatively young. Anyone can have a sudden cardiac arrest. He’s fully recovered and without doubt will create and score valuable goals
@John Kelly: you’re not allowed to talk sense on here John
Potentially a good signing but I remember his last 18 months at Spurs..completely downed tools. With the atmosphere and attitudes at United at the moment, is he going to perk the place up..I doubt it especially with Fernández moaning and bawling all the time.
@Barry Evans: any player coming in fresh will be eager to show what they can contribute. That can only be a positive for the team.
Don’t see what the big issue with him being 30 is… he could still have another 3 or 4 good years in him
Wow shows you how far United have fallen
@ed: very true. Spurs and Conte didn’t want him and he would have preferred to stay in London.
