HIGH PERFORMANCE COACH Chris Jones believes that Irish athletics is moving to a level where international success will no longer be such a rarity.
Jones is working closely alongside Triathlon Ireland and Athletics Ireland in the run up to London 2012 and having seen first-hand the support systems put in place, he feels that it won’t be long before this investment bears fruit.

“If you’re talking globally about where Irish sport is, we’ve got systems in place,” Jones told TV3′s Ireland AM. “The Irish Sports Council and the Irish Institute of Sport are making huge strides and huge gains in investment, and actually how they invest in coaching and how they invest in the support services with athletes.
“Before, we had anomalies like Sonia [O'Sullivan], John Treacy, Eamon Coughlan. They were all amazing athletes and they did it, and they’d probably say they did it with their own coach and in their own way whereas now there are much more stronger systems.
“Hopefully now that creates a stronger pathway for bringing athletes through and obviously creates a better opportunity for athletes to perform.”
Blueprint for athletic success taking shape, says Jones
