Defending champion Chris Froome crashes out of Tour de France

Two spills in less than 24 hours have ruled the Team Sky rider out of this year’s event.

THE DEFENDING TOUR de France champion Chris Froome has crashed out of the event.

The Team Sky rider, who suffered a bad fall on Tuesday’s fourth stage, had two more bad spills on this afternoon’s rain-affected fifth stage.

The Kenyan-born cyclist briefly received treatment from Sky’s support team and a new bike was prepped. However, after a consultation with medical staff, he took his seat in the back of the team car. His tour, like that of fellow Briton Mark Cavendish, is over.

The stage from Ypres in Belgium to Arenberg Porte du Hainaut was flagged as a potential danger as rain on the cobbled road sections may prove treacherous. Froome did not get to reach that section of the stage, however, as his crashes came in the opening 40 minutes of the day.
