'What a wonderful world': How American newspapers reacted to the Cubs' historic victory

President Obama also paid tribute to the new world champions.

SAY IT AS often as you like but it doesn’t sound real. The Chicago Cubs are the World Series champions. Last night’s thrilling Game 7 of the Cubs-Indians best-of-seven championship series was one of the most memorable sporting events in history.

The Cubs shook off all the talk of the billy goat curse and the baseball gods. They fought back from 3-1 down to pull off the franchise’s first World Series since 1908. Even President Barack Obama, a Chicago native and White Sox fan, got in on congratulating the Cubs.

The front and back pages of several newspapers across the United States reflect the glory of a remarkable Chicago victory, and the agony of Cleveland’s narrow defeat.
