Real Madrid are in danger of being kicked out of the Copa del Rey - reports

Rafa Benitez could have a big headache to deal with in the coming days.

REAL MADRID COULD face expulsion from the Copa del Rey after they apparently fielded an ineligible player against Cadiz this evening.

Denis Cheryshev opened the scoring for Rafael Benitez’s side after just three minutes of the last 32 tie.

But Spanish newspaper Sport reports that the Russian winger should have been serving a suspension in the competition.

Cheryshev spent last season on loan with Villarreal and accumulated three yellow cards in the competition.

He was substituted after 40 seconds of the second half as reports about his ineligibility began to circulate, with Cadiz fans chanting “Benitez – check Twitter!”

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique appeared to make reference to the controversy with this emoji-heavy tweet sent while the second half was still being played:

Osasuna were expelled from the Copa del Rey earlier this season after they fielded an ineligible player.
