GOLAZOS, SCREAMERS, THRONKERS… there were some serious strikes during the course of this season’s Uefa Champions League campaign.
But there can be only one Goal of the Season, so what was it for you?
Matchday 1 – Alessandro Florenzi
Roma 1-1 Barcelona
Roma full-back Florenzi took aim from the right-hand touchline — just past the half-way line — and sent a perfect effort over Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen to earn his side a draw.
A lot of credit for this goal must go to Arda Turan and his jinking run at the right edge of the penalty area but Suarez’s shot was essentially unstoppable and secured a remarkable comeback for the defending champions.
After he turned the ball over at halfway, the Brazilian put the head down until he was about 30 yards from goal before unleashing a left-footed thunderbolt that just curled away from the outstretched hand of Anthony Lopes and into the Lyon net.
The only free-kick on the list, the home side were struggling to create a winner before the Brazilian winger fired home an unstoppable set-piece with just eight minutes left to play to secure all three points.
This was the very definition of a team goal. Indeed, there were no fewer than 27 passes between Barcelona players in the build-up and the move culminated in Messi’s deft finish over Roma goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny to make it 2-0 on the night.
19-year-old Cornet helped Lyon to their first win in this season’s Uefa Champions League with a brilliant postage stamp finish. The striker collected the ball down the right before cutting inside and curling home into the top left corner while surrounded by three defenders.
Anything Leo can do… right? CR7′s powers may be on the wane but this strike was a throwback to when he was at his very best. Cutting in from the wing and shooting powerfully past a hapless keeper was his signature move for many seasons. Top drawer.
There were shades of Ronnie Whelan’s volley against the USSR at Euro 88 about this particular Suarez effort but the Barcelona attacker picked his spot perfectly and fired home a spectacular volley to help his side to a 5-1 aggregate win in the Round of 16.
The French striker gets the credit for his perfectly placed header but the real class in this goal comes in the shape of team-mate Saul Niguez’s assist; his curling pass with the outside of the boot was truly a work of art.
Niguez went from provider to finisher with his mazy run allowing him to skip past numerous hapless Bayern defenders before slotting home into the bottom left hand corner of Manuel Neuer’s goal, giving the Munich goalkeeper no chance.
