DONALD โCOWBOYโ CERRONE (34-11) has hinted that heโll be the man in the opposite corner when Conor McGregor (21-4) returns to the UFCโs octagon.
With his first-round submission of Mike Perry in Denver last weekend, Cerrone overtook Georges St-Pierre and Michael Bisping by setting a new record for UFC wins โ 21.
Afterwards, the American veteran โ who has been competing as a welterweight for the past three years โ claimed that the UFC have already proposed a big fight for a return to the lightweight division. He told reporters:
โItโs exciting. The guyโs very exciting. Youโll like it. Youโll all like it.โ
Although Cerrone refused to mention the name of the opponent at the time, he appeared to imply that a fight with McGregor is in the works on social media this morning. In an Instagram post, Cerrone said heโs โjust waiting onโ the Dubliner.
Prior to McGregorโs featherweight and lightweight title successes, the pair traded barbs on a number of occasions when a match-up seemed a distinct possibility.
Speaking to The42 in December 2015, Cerrone said: โI want that payday. The son of a bitch draws people and he talks well. That would be a huge payday for me. Heโs a salesman and he does a really good job of it.
โI donโt have a personal problem with Conor but if he starts saying personal things to me then weโll figure it the fuck out. Iโll slap his ass and call him a little schoolgirl.โ
However, their careers have since moved in different directions. A couple of weeks after he made those comments, Cerrone had an eight-fight win streak snapped when he lost via first-round TKO to then-champion Rafael dos Anjos in a lightweight title bout.
Thereafter, Cerrone moved up to welterweight and went on a 4-0 run in 2016 by recording stoppage victories over Alex Oliveira, Patrick Cote, Rick Story and Matt Brown. However, his progress through the 170-pound division ground to a halt last year when he suffered defeats to Jorge Masvidal, Robbie Lawler and Darren Till.
The 35-year-old bounced back by overcoming Yancy Medeiros in February of this year. He then emerged on the wrong side of a decision against Leon Edwards in June, before returning to winning ways at Mike Perryโs expense on Saturday.
While Cerroneโs overtures about a potential clash with McGregor have certainly got tongues wagging, itโs not unlikely that โCowboyโ is merely attempting to drum up hype for what would be a lucrative bout in the twilight of his career.
UFC president Dana White has insisted on several occasions recently that McGregorโs next move wonโt be decided upon until his case with the Nevada State Athletic Commission has been resolved.
Both McGregor and lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov are facing possible fines and suspensions as a result of the melee that occurred in the aftermath of Nurmagomedovโs resounding win in last monthโs fight in Las Vegas. A disciplinary hearing is scheduled to take place on 10 December.
McGregor has said that while his preference is for a rematch with Nurmagoemdov, heโs also willing to face โthe next in lineโ in his bid to regain the lightweight title.

Not a Cork fan but this guy is pure class. Whether Cork go on to win the replay or not heโs definitely deserving of an all star for his performances this year.
As for his comments about Barry Kelly in his post match interview he showed pure class and Davy Fitz could take some lessons from him.
Not a Clare man, but corner a guy like Davy Fitz straight after a game and heโll shoot from the hip, raw emotion. I donโt doubt that with hindsight heโd approach it differently. Sure weโd be lost without characters like him in the game.
hindsight, ha!!!!! sure didnโt sound like that with his interview on clare fm this morning!
the man is a disgrace to Clare hurling with all his stupid carry on!!!
Iโm from Limerick, but i think its safe to say Nobody in Clare, either supporters or county board, will give a damn what he says in interviews if they win on the 28th. Itโs not a popularity contest.
Anthony Nash gets a lot of coverage here and rightly so. However every man who togged out for Clare and Cork today should be held as national treasures.
A very proud Irishman today.
Get over it aideen Davy was dead right
Whatโs the story with the love in with Nash in the journal or is he the only player they allow out to speak?
The fact heโs the best keeper in the country, by a distance, might have something to do with it.
Nash is a proud limerick man who did his duty for the boys in green today ;)
Nash is a cork man. His relations are limerick
Trevor needs to do his homework! !!
