A CONTROVERSIAL GOAL from Kyogo Furuhashi was enough to give Celtic victory over Hearts in a close encounter at Parkhead.
The Japan forward looked like he might be marginally offside as he converted Anthony Ralston’s cross in the 33rd minute but Bobby Madden and his officials gave the goal.
Celtic had other chances but Hearts came back strongly after the break with Barrie McKay causing a number of problems before missing an excellent late chance in an exciting finale.
The 1-0 victory took Celtic back to four points behind Rangers after the leaders won by the same score against Hibernian 24 hours earlier following a much-debated penalty award.
Celtic had Carl Starfelt and Tom Rogic back in the team following injury while James Forrest also came in. Defender Cameron Carter-Vickers was missing because of a personal issue and Jota and Stephen Welsh both went off injured in the second half – while Ireland international James McCarthy remained an unused substitute.
Hearts made four changes with Andy Halliday and the injured Beni Baningime among those dropping out. Josh Ginnelly replaced Liam Boyce up front as Robbie Neilson looked for pace to cause Celtic problems with attacking midfielders Ben Woodburn, Aaron McEneff and McKay also starting ahead of a back four.
Celtic started brightly. Starfelt headed wide before Hearts had a huge let-off after David Turnbull robbed Cammy Devlin. Craig Gordon spilled Jota’s resulting shot but Forrest stabbed the loose ball against the post from close range.
Jota twice shot over the bar from outside the box, Ralston was too high from a half chance and Gordon tipped Callum McGregor’s deflected effort wide.
Hearts were attacking when they could and Joe Hart was called into action when Craig Halkett got a shot away following Stephen Kingsley’s free-kick.
The opener came after Ralston ran round the outside of Rogic and drilled in a cross which Furuhashi turned home at the near post. The Japan international was ahead of the Hearts defence and replays suggested he was also slightly ahead of Ralston when the right-back struck the cross, but offside appeals went unheeded.
Ralston was injured in the process and soon went off for Adam Montgomery, with Juranovic swapping flanks.
Turnbull had several shots diverted behind after the interval, one after a sweeping and silky counter-attack.
Hearts defender Kingsley had a brilliant chance when he ran untracked to the near post to meet McKay’s corner but he cut his header too thinly and it flashed beyond the far post.
Juranovic shot over from a decent chance but Hearts kept threatening.
McKay had an effort saved and set up both Boyce and Halkett for chances, the former fluffing his first opportunity and the defender heading wide. The former Rangers winger set up the second chance while dodging missiles from the standing section behind him.
Celtic lost Jota and Welsh in quick succession. Nir Bitton came on in central defence before Jota’s replacement, Mikey Johnston, came close with a strike that Furuhashi almost turned in.
Forrest had a great chance to settle matters in the 84th minute when he was played in by Furuhashi but Gordon saved and Hearts were soon away on the counter-attack.
Substitute Gary Mackay-Steven looked set to score but he stumbled and McKay shot just wide from the loose ball with Hart stranded.
Hearts manager Robbie Neilson was booked as he remonstrated with the officials, claiming Mackay-Steven had his heel clipped.
Turnbull had a shot diverted inches wide in stoppage-time and Celtic saw out the remainder of the game in the Hearts half.

Clearly paves the way for a Liverpool legend to take the reins. Cometh the hour, cometh the Stan. #Staunton
I’m the gaffer
What I say goes
banana skin
I haven’t got a Scubby Doo
He had his chance. Wonder who’s next?
David Moyes looks under pressure in Spain.
Big Sam
Mick McCarthy
Jurgen Klopp look nailed on
Stan?
Jose might be looking for work soon.
terry venables and big ron atkinson are favourites.
Dan,
Heard Jose is being sacked tomorrow. But going to Sunderland, Said it a better club
Alex Ferguson is available…
Lol…. Really? Do not give up your day job as the anti-humour king.
Alan Pardew. They’re trying to snatch him up before Chelsea do.
Brian Cody couldn’t even sort that lot out.
Jose is more suited to being a primary school P.E. teacher. At least he’d be near people with a similar mental age…
“Liverpool showed great character in sacking me” Brendan Rodgers
Hahahahahahaha hilarious! This joke really hasn’t been done before!
Hilarious, comedy gold right there
Bitter sweet. No body has died and Brendan won’t go hungry. I think he would except that he didn’t do goo enough.
You live and die,by your signings. He’s bought an awful lot of muck for big bucks. As an Evertonian sad to see him go.
He didn’t sign them though did he? I’d love a spot on one of those transfer committees!
David are you under 12 years old and play FIFA career mode? If so then you meet the requirements of getting a spot in the transfer committee.
Hurump hurump Steven as a fellow toffee I am sad to see him go
considering Everton never managed to win a derby while he was there, that’s a bit of stupid statement
Took them long enough.
That they did. In fairness he can’t have complaints the results so far have been dire. To those saying Suarez nearly got them the title are right to a point but the manager had them playing a brand of ball that kept the masses happy so he as well as Suarez nearly won them the title. Problem for Brendan was he went away from the tried and trusted method which in itself was madness. All he had to do was get the back 4 defending as a unit. I’ll miss him he wasn’t the worse but those post match interviews were a national scandal. So best of luck Brendan hope another club gives you a call straight away.
It’s mad to think he was the second longest reining manager in the premiere league.
Maybe Sunderland might come calling John. And what now for Liverpool? Those rumours of “Jose for Anfield” will start to gather momentum !!!
Don’t think Sunderland would suit Rodgers Sloop and as for Jose wouldn’t have him anywhere near the club he’s a cancer.
Rumour going around that Liverpool are setting their sights higher than Rodgers. Roddy Collins was allegedly seen in a pub near the ground today.
Rodgers will be the next celtic manager.
Next villa manager
Character
Looks like jolly Rodgers is going to have to set up a new account with a pun including the name of the new Liverpool manger and Nucky will have to come up with a new joke (he’s been using the same one for a month now)
The fault of the players, not just the manager. Same thing going on at Chelsea. About time the players took some of the heat for not doing what they are paid a fortune for
He can have no complaints. Not good enough
Wrong decision, should’ve either sacked him in the summer or stood by their choice until at least November.
Agree completely.
I agree as well Sean. Look at the league results.
Beat Stoke away. Drew with Arsenal and Everton. Lost to United. On balance not a bad return there. Home form has been poor. beat Bournmouth and Villa. Lost to West Ham who have also beaten City and Arsenal away. Poor draw against Norwich. Had they got 2 better home results they could have been top 5.
I think what has been most disappointing is that they have conceded after going ahead in their last 6 games in all competitions, and Mingolet has been fairly good so the defense is a huge problem. Always has been under Rodgers. It possibly cost them the league 2 years ago.
Feel a bit sorry for him all the same but I wonder had he lost the dressing room. That Europa league is a bloody dose as well. More trouble than its worth.
Klopp or Ancellotti
Klopp maybe. Carlo will have zero interest in Liverpool.
I’d say they have someone lined up already.
Carlo is a Liverpool supporter
If it ends up being Carlo then the timing of this sacking could be down to the fact that Carlo has been linked to the Roma job recently
Carlo has always had great respect for Liverpool, see’s them as much more than just a club. I would not be surprised to see him there. Just because the years have been lean for Pool, does not make them any less of a great club. Anfield is being expanded, they do spend….. Why not?
There isn’t that many big clubs around. Liverpool is probably the 11th or 12th biggest jobs in club football at the moment. Anyone who thinks that the Liverpool job is beneath certain manager is clueless about football.
zero interest in Liverpool ..now there’s a catch phrase.
The word on the “grapevine” – i.e. listening to The Anfield Wrap – is that they have spoken with Ancelotti and Klopp, with the German much more interested that the Italian. Hardly a surprise: Ancelotti could manage anywhere, and Liverpool don’t have the resources to compete at the top.
De Boer tentatively expressed an interest the other day, also, and he was reputed to have been considered in 2012 when Rodgers was appointed.
The other factor which may have come into play is alleged to be the Bayern Munich job. Rumours in Germany are that Pep will leave in the summer, and the Bavarians are apparently sounding out Klopp. FSG may have decided to try to get in there first.
Personally, I’d love to see Diego Simeone get the job. He’s done wonders with Athletico, who are in a similar position to Liverpool in many ways. Would be perfectly happy with Klopp, too.
The real problems are behind the scenes: lack of leadership, vision and clarity of purpose from FSG.
Popeye or Mr Magoo
Ron. Who’s your money on.
Brian, you said that Ancelotti could manage any where. Considering he’s managed Chelsea, Madrid, Milan and PSG what other jobs do you think he could get in the next 12 months that would be better than Liverpool?
They’ve only sacked him because they’ve gotten someone so I’d be disappointed if it isn’t Ancelotti or Kloop. Any other out if work managers(including myself) would be a let down.
Juventus – currently 12th after 7 games. Allegri is under pressure.
Chelsea – how many more defeats will Abramovich endure?
Barcelona – would be a stretch, given his Madrid role but, as ever, Carlo managed to stay out of the nasty politics of Spanish football.
Italy – is Carlo ready for the pipe and slippers job? Maybe
Ancelotti would be a great coup Ron, if they can get him. Quality manager who won titles in several countries.
Stockport county
@Ron Koeman – the above reply (jobs that Carlo might get within 12 months) is to you, btw!
Juve won’t be sacking anyone considering the players they have lost. Ancelotti has already managed at Chelsea so can’t see him go back there. Barcelona only really promote from with in. i reckon most managers would jump at the Liverpool job
Ye are all forgetting one big issue. money. like players managers will follow the money. both in wages and money for players. I’m not saying the managers above will not take the job but money will be a big factor in who they get.
@RonKoeman – don’t think Juventus expectations will have lowered, but agree that they will not quickly sack Allegri.
Also agree that Carlo won’t go back to the Bridge.
Disagree about FCB: Rijkaard had no connection, and Luis Enrique was managing at Celta when they poached him. There is no-one internally that is a viable candidate currently.
Man City is surely a potentially vacant job at some point soon, not to mention Man Utd.
All of that said, I was playing devil’s advocate a bit! Ancelotti has stated in the past that he has a lot of admiration for LFC, especially after what they did to his Milan side in Istanbul.
Liverpool are 8th biggest sports club in the world.
Liverpool have the 5th biggest wage budget in England, and that consistently is what determines where a club finishes in the Premiership.
Juventus have just won 4 in a row, and also understand the importance of rebuilding. They will not be sacking anyone.
Ancellotti had a spell at juventus and was sacked after about six months. He was never a popular figure at juve, the fans never took to him .
Thats a shame
has to be klopp
won’t be Klopp, he’s too charismatic.
Deluded Brendan’s merch business is gonna fall off a cliff now.
I get a push notification for this?
klopps brother, klipatey
He said judge him in 3 years and sadly for Rodgers he has been judged, £7.5m in the bank account going, no fear of him.
“Liverpool showed great character in sacking me” Brendan Rodgers 2015
Stop regurgitating sh..e you read somewhere else Is that supposed to be funny? Hope we get ancelloti and not klopp
hi neenee
Why do you think they have a chance Rusty ? Did you read that Sh!te somewhere else …..
Well they are the two most high profile managers available and Liverpool are the most successful British club in European football, so let’s just say it’s a guess
A no let’s call it what it is ….. DRW ! Deluded Rodger’s Waffle….. Anchellotti isn’t work so that means he wants the job yes and Klopp’s sisters friends neighbour has a rat call King Kenny so he must be interested too
What’s a drw?
Rodgered!
These comments are too one-sided. A bit of balance required. Ah sure the poor cratur, he wasn’t given a fair chance, the players let him down, nobody could replace Suarez, and he a fine Irish man too, …. etc etc
Came closer to title than any pool manager in 25 years. Anyone who says that was entirely down to suarez knows f all about football. That said, he had to go. Shame, was hoping he would succeed
So if it wasnt down to suarez what happened last year then !!
If you read back very slowly, you will realise that I used the word entirely. Are you suggesting that Suarez was the only reason Liverpool did well that season? If so, it’s not only brendan that is deluded
and good luck to you and your new teeth!!!!!
dick advocate is available
You’re advocating dick?
I do. think he might just b the guy to keep us up for this season at least
wrong call in my opinion. typical Liverpool not standing by their coach.
Nonsense James – if anything, Liverpool have a history of standing by failing coaches for too long. The obvious exception is Hodgson, but he was such a farcically bad appointment in the first place, and was only appointed because no one else would work in the comedy club that Hicks & Gillet created.
In hindsight, Rodgers should have gone last summer. His reputation with the fanbase never recovered from the 6-1 humiliation against Stoke. If FSG knew more about football, they would have culled him straight away and given a new man the transfer budget and the preseason. The only saving grace is that they have rectified their mistake quickly, and the new guy inherits a reasonable squad that is actually not that poorly placed due to the sheer mediocrity of the best teams in the league.
Neenee for gaffer!!
Would be great entertainment!
Not nice but, no surprise. Liverpool have been awful and need direction.
Sad to hear about brendan Rodgers irrespective of what club it is… These transfer committees never ever work, there is no way they can work the transfers should be left to the manager and not a group of people with nothing to do with the first team. They obviously haven’t trusted Rodgers in a while if they had the transfer committee for the last 2 years … Liverpool keep chopping and changing managers and if that’s the case they should look at their own policy not the managers
writing was on the wall as they say. Too many bad signings, and the inability to replace suarez. Too many signings ” for the future ” and not enough here and now signings.
Suarez was virtually irreplaceable
It’s about time. Squandered 100s of millions on donkeys with nothing to show for it. Runners up in a season Saurez carried them right through. A right arrogant b@$t@rd aswel. Great news
How arrogant? Any examples?
A bit bitter?
de Boer would do well at Anfield. klopp is over rated.
Overrated? Just won the bundesliga and marginally lost the CL final in the last few minutes on a low budget
This is soccer. It is not serious and DOES NOT require a push notification. Sad acts.
requires a comment though apparently
Jose to the Pool
We wouldn’t take him
big sam the man .
Was always punching above his weight and made to look good by Saurez, handled Gerrard’s departure poorly and his handling of the CL match away to Real was totally at odds with whats expected of a Liverpool manager. But good luck to him in his future endeavours.
Liverpool need an ambitious signing, in 2004 they got the La Liga winning manager to join them but since then got the Fulham and Swansea managers(no offence to either club).
Club too big. couldn’t attract the players or keep them . word on the street is ajax manager got it. unveiled on Thursday
better get klopp in before Chelsea do!
Toodle-oo Brendan.
Saddest part of this whole affair is my favorite Twitter account, Deluded Brendan, will be no more
Should give Carragher a shot
NOOOOOOooooooooooooo !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
de Boer would be a good manager for pool. klopp is over rated.
Owners need to Klopp on to themselves and bring in the right man to bring the club forward
Might as well get Ronald Koeman to be our next manager.Hell half the feckin team we bought from Southampton so he should feel right at home.
The search lol Klopp signed up 2 weeks ago prob..Prob with pool is too many average players . it’s not always the managers fault
And the ref today at Goodison keeps his job – justice my arse.
needed my time
Finally!
Dear Brendan
So long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen, goodbye
Sincerely
Jurgen
I’d say Klopp is favourite at this stage. That said, I pictured him at Arsenal when Wenger goes.
Will Frank be on the committee to appoint the successor I wonder
ha
2 mayo boys available same style football
Players if today are nothing more than mercenaries no affiliation too clubs only their bank accounts.
Even as a gooner disappoint to see Brendan gone as a fellow St Patrick’s Ballymena man .
They might get Marino and make them a compleat shower of ………….
dan Marino ?
Of ‘Simpsons’ fame?
A journal notification for this. come on ffs.
Wiil Frank be on the committee to appoint the successor I wonder
what about Brian kerr or tramp.
Mike Bassett is the man for Liverpool
Klopp for the Kop. *giggles to self*
Bring back King kenny to rightly finish of the job
Let’s hope he shows great character in his sacking
The next shankley what was been spun around the place, hilarious stuff. The tan with the teeth was a spoofer and a fraud. Will end up in non league as he is useless.
A terrible shame, only one spoofer left in the league.
So who said he was the next shankly? Apart from yourself
How did pancake face do today?
Give me a break Van Gaal
your right ex pool players qued up to hail brendan as the reincarnation of shanks, whealan Aldridge that headcase Phil thompson and lots more.
Exactly, all calling out the new Shanks.
“I love to go for a jog around the city and smell the mince coming out of the kitchens” b Rodgers quote Muppet
Ray Winstone
yippeeee
A notification for this? wtf
Brian kerr’s dog…………
Never rated him. Always thought he was out of his leadue. His player buying was extremely bad
He didn’t pick the purchases. The transfer comittee did that.
big sam for sure. yous lucky feckers
Paul lambert the next pool manager
Will Smith
A legend!
No great surprise about BR leaving/firing today it’s all abt results and for far too long the results have being going downhill, but what now & who is going to be the new guy??? The squad stays & January is a long way off so yes the club did the right thing today but they should have done in the summer that way they could have off loaded a lot more than just Rodgers…. whoever does come in will have his work cut out to right things and I still think this season will end like last season scrapping for 5th or 6th ( if we are lucky).
Lucas should be installed as player/manager immediately!
DID YOU KNOW………

Silly cuuunt
A lot of mancs on here
Well, you expect them to talk about the Arsenal game?
Didn’t show enough character in the end
carragher to take over with Neville as assistant an Thierry henry as a director of football
Must say about tine. He should have not got the New Contract anyway. Liverpool are bigger than the manager and players it’s about time someone lead in thus Club.
