CELTIC CAN GO top of the cinch Premiership with a win over Rangers on Wednesday night after Liel Abadaโs last-gasp strike gave them a 1-0 win against Dundee United at Parkhead.
Elsewhere, Ireland U21 international Ross Tierney earned his first start for Motherwell, who were beaten 2-0 by Hearts.
Tierney made a substitute appearance for his new club last weekend, earning a penalty for Motherwell on his debut having recently joined from Bohemians. He played the full game today as Andy Halliday and Ellis Simms scored for Hearts to put them 10 points clear of their rivals on the table.
The champions Rangers had slipped up with a 3-3 draw against Ross County at Dingwall earlier in the day to go five points clear but Ange Postecoglousโs side spent most of the afternoon being frustrated by the disciplined visitors.
With seconds remaining of the 90 minutes and the Hoops down to 10 men after stand-in skipper Nir Bitton was sent off in the 81st minute by referee Euan Anderson for picking up his second yellow card, winger Abada fired in a dramatic winner.
The triumph took Celtic to within two points of Rangers ahead of the Old Firm game and a fixture which is traditionally tense and hard-fought has an extra layer of intrigue added.
For such a key match, Postecoglou had to choose from a depleted squad with captain Callum McGregor, Yosuke Ideguchi, Kyogo Furuhashi, David Turnbull and Albian Ajeti all out injured while Tom Rogic and Daizen Maeda were away on international duty.
Anthony Ralston, Liam Scales and Abada returned to the starting line-up while United boss Tam Courts rang the changes with Adrian Sporle, Nicky Clark, 19-year-old Archie Meekison, Ilmari Niskanen and 18-year-old Lewis Neilson all handed a start.
Before kick-off Postecoglou and McGregor laid a wreath on the pitch in tribute to former Celtic title-winning manager Wim Jansen, who recently died, before a minuteโs applause.
United caused some early concerns and in the seventh minute Sporle came close with a drive from inside the box which Hoops keeper Joe Hart was pleased to see whizz past his far post.
Moments later, Unitedโs Calum Butcher foiled Giorgos Giakoumakis as the 27-year-old Greece striker, who scored in each of the last two games, was too slow to get his shot away.
Soon, the well-organised defence were deep in their own half and in the 27th minute Abada weaved his way into the United box but his angled-drive from close range was knocked away by Ben Siegrist.
The keeper was then injured preventing Giakoumakis getting a clean shot on goal from Abadaโs low cross to the near post but resumed after treatment.
Siegrist then parried a decent long-distance drive from Matt OโRiley, making his home debut following his move from MK Dons, before the midfielder missed a great chance, failing to hit the target from a James Forrest cross.
The Scotland winger and Scales stayed inside at the break, replaced by on-loan Portuguese winger Jota and left-back Josip Juranovic, and within moments Siegrist parried away OโRileyโs header from a Jota cross.
United replaced injured defender Scott McMann with Ross Graham and the visitors stuck to their defensive tasks under increasing pressure during which Siegrist somehow managed to keep out Giakoumakisโ strike from six yards with his foot.
In the 67th minute Postecoglou went for another double substitute with Ralston and Reo Hatate making way for defender Greg Taylor and 16-year-old debutant attacker Ben Doak.
Parkhead jangled with tension and nerves as Celtic kept up the tempo but with nine minutes remaining Bitton, booked earlier for a challenge on Tony Watt, was sent packing for a foul on United substitute Declan Glass just outside the Celtic box.
There was still a twist to come and at the death, Abada pulled Jotaโs cross out of the air and fired the ball high into the net.

Aussie gleeson before De Burca he only looked to be good cuz he was the extra player
Good point but De Burca is nailed on. The media appear not to take the fact he was a free man in to consideration.
As said in the article played the sweeper role brilliantly ,if youโre marking youโre doing it wrong. Noel Connors unlucky tho ,he had Pa Horgan in his pocket for two big games this year.
Thatโll be 4 for Paul Murphy in 4 years some going. In fairness some player
3 in 4 years*
Canโt really argue with that, people putting Johnny Glynn on the team was mad as he was average in each game bar cork. If Mannion had a played average in Leinster and all Ireland finals heโd be nearly hurler of the year but he was poor in both, great in all other games.
Glynn won a rake of puck outs every game or at least broke them down. Invaluable in a forward line. Very underrated before cork game and over hyped after
That could be spot on.
wat does Conor Fogarty have to do to get all star also Eoin Larkin hardest working and most consistent kk player all year
Iโm from tipp and would only have s callinan as sole tipp representative on team
No joe canning
No. Are you surprised? Iโm not.
Yeah he went for a walkabout on Jones road in the 2nd half
so did the rest of the team, canโt blame one indivdual
No but Canning is supposed to be the main man. Most of the Kilkenny team didnโt perform in the second half against Galway in the 2012 All Ireland final but yet Henry Shefflin gave a masterclass. For some reason people always try make excuses for Joe Canning. Itโs about time these people woke up and realised heโs not as good as was expected of him.
Bubbles for ger aylward
Bubbles wasnโt there in the semi tho
No chance of that happening.
Shane Fives ahead of Cashel Barrett?
canning is top scorer (2nd top scorer from play behind mannion) people expect a lot more from him! Iโll put my house on it that heโll get one!
You will be losing your house so. Putting up big scores against weak teams doesnโt guarantee an All Star. He scored a goal in the Leinster final but did nothing else, was awful against a terrible Cork team, didnโt do a huge amount against Tipp and disappeared in the second half of the All Ireland when his county needed him the most!
you couldnโt be more wrong, what weak teams did they play?
Couldnโt be more wrong! Really? Canning scored 1-15 against Laois. The last time I checked they were not exactly a hurling force.
Itโs also easy to be top scorer when youโve played the most games. TJ Reid, Maurice Shanahan & Seamus Callanan all had higher scoring averages. Those 3 are guaranteed All Stars. That shows being the top scorer isnโt everything.
Laois and a poor Dublin side in the first round of Leinster. Including reply he scored 2-9 then 1-15 against a poor Laois team.
Paddy Murphy from Offaly for Jason flynn
Fairly spot on team . No real other stand out consistent players
Cathal Barrett god dam predictive txt.
Barrett deserves one for sure in my book but Iโd have James Barry of Tipp instead of Holden at full back. Other than that the team is pretty close to the one thatโll actually be announced Iโd say.
Canning should nearly be there ahead of Aylward too maybe. The goal in Lenister final and to be fair despite the wides he hit he still got savage scores in every game. In his defence he was pretty much double marked 2nd half of AI final
James Barry??? That gave me a good laugh. Thanks!!
Ger Aylward apart from his scoring ( 3-15 or so ) was a symbol of the Kilkenny forwards working back ethic โ he also was a key provider such as TJ Reids goal with the hopped pass and was very industrious
Very little from Shanahan apart from frees I would have Mannion
