Cavan need a new football manager as they get set to play in Division 1 of the league in 2019

It was announced last night that Mattie McGleenan is stepping down.

CAVAN ARE THE latest county on the hunt for a new senior football manager after Mattie McGleenan brought his time in charge to a close last night.

Despite clinching promotion to Division 1 of the football league for 2019, McGleenan has departed after two years in charge.

Cavan lost out to Roscommon in the Division 2 league final last April but had claimed one of the coveted promotion spots to the top tier of the league after a last day victory over Tipperary.

Their championship campaign saw them lose out to Donegal in the Ulster opener before picking up wins in the qualifiers over Wicklow and Down. They lost out by 0-18 to 1-12 to Tyrone last Saturday week in Round 3 of the All-Ireland senior football championship with that transpiring to be McGleenan’s final game in charge.

A former Tyrone player, McGleenan gudied Monaghan club Scotstown to county title wins and an Ulster club final appearance before he took the managerial reins in Cavan.

In a statement released by Cavan GAA, McGleenan thanked his backroom team, the players and the county board.

“Mattie expressed his gratitude to all the players for their huge commitment and effort for the Cavan cause. They gave it their all and were a great group to work with.

“Mattie would like to thank the county board under Chairman Gerry Brady and the officers for the opportunity to manage Cavan and for the continued support over the past two years. He wishes Cavan all the best in the future.”

He was also thanked for his contribution by the Cavan county board.

“Cavan GAA would like to put on record their appreciation and gratitude for the huge commitment and effort Mattie and his management have given to Cavan football. Mattie has an infectious positivity and was always a pleasure to work with. We wish Mattie and his family every success in the future.”
