IRISH TRACK CYCLIST Caroline Ryan has won a bronze medal at the World Cup in Aguascalientes, Mexico.
The 34-year-old Garda Cycling Club member, competing in the Women’s Individual Pursuit, finished behind Rebecca Wiasak of Australia and Great Britain’s Elinor Baker with a new Irish record time of 3.34.257.
“Caroline rode a controlled race early on, and fought hard in the closing laps, to make sure she won Ireland’s first Elite Women’s World Cup medal,” coach Brian Nugent told Cycling Ireland.
It was going to be difficult to take a medal tonight, but Caroline met the challenge head on, and she deserved that one. We’re all so proud of her.”
It is the first time an Irish cyclist has secured a medal at the World Cup in the Women’s category. Ryan also earned a place in both the Points Race and the Individual Pursuit in the upcoming UCI Track Cycling World Championship 2014.
