Here's why Carmelo Anthony has decided to lose so much weight

LeBron James has probably shed the excess muscle for the same reasons.

LIKE LEBRON JAMES Carmelo Anthony has lost a sight of weight this summer.

Why shed that muscle mass?

Well, a unnamed source told the New York Post that Anthony wanted to get back to the shape he was in as a rookie:

“He wants to be as athletic as he was when he was a rookie. Plus he wants to be a facilitator in the triangle and speed will help that.”

In Anthony’s first year as a pro with the Nuggets, he was listed at 230lbs (104.3 kg, 16 stone 6lbs). Last season he was listed at 240 pounds (108.8 kg).

According to Hall of Famer Reggie Miller, (who was never a bulky player) the drop in weight will not only help ‘Melo in the short-term, it could prolong his career:

“You carry on too much weight,” Miller told TMZ, “it shortens longevity of a basketball player, especially later on. You get up in years, it’s less wear and tear on your body. It’s actually pretty smart.”

So how has Anthony shed the weight? By working out like crazy and, like LeBron, eating a “mostly low-carb diet.”

The Post report that Anthony had been working out three times a day, a combination of basketball and agility drills, yoga, and weightlifting. As for diet, he has been “mostly carb-free.”

His recent Instagram shows that he is much closer to that rookie weight than his 2013-2014 season weight:

LeBron James also lost “significant weight” during the off-season after the 29-year-old sealed his return to hometown team, the Cleveland Cavaliers. At 29 and 30 respectively, James and Anthony were both signing one of their last contracts this season and this evidence suggests they are eager to maximise their remaining time on the court.
