Carl Froch apologises over Kessler 'kill' comments

“On Saturday night, if I have to, I will kill him. It sounds brutal, it sounds horrible, but that is what this means to me.” Grim.

BRITISH BOXER Carl Froch has apologised after threatening to “kill” Mikkel Kessler when the two meet in the ring on Saturday.

Froch and Kessler face each other at the O2 Arena in London in what is a world title unification fight for the WBA and IBF super-middleweight crowns.

Froch, who has won 30 of his 32 fights to date, with 22 of those victories coming via knockout, turned up the heat on his rival at Wednesday’s pre-fight press conference when he declared: “On Saturday night, if I have to, I will kill him. It sounds brutal, it sounds horrible, but that is what this means to me.”

However, following criticism today and confirmation from the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBC) that they will investigate what they deemed to be “inappropriate” comments, Froch took to Twitter to make an apology.

He wrote: “I’m sorry if my comments yesterday offended anyone. This fight means so much to me & emotions are running high. See you at the weigh in.”

IBF champion Froch lost to Dane Kessler – the WBA title holder, who comes into the fight with a 46(35)-2-0 record - by unanimous decision when the pair last met in April 2010.
