Cardinals defence swoops late to pick off Vikings and secure playoff berth

Dwight Freeney was the hero for Arizona last night.

DWIGHT FREENEY STRIPPED the ball from the hands of Teddy Bridgewater with just five seconds remaining to prevent the Minnesota Vikings from kicking the game-tying field goal last night.

The future Hall of Fame linebacker struck the quarterback’s arm to make the Vikings pay the heaviest of prices for choosing to run one more passing play instead of kicking a very makable field goal from the 31-yard line.

The fumble recovery not only clinched a 23-20 victory for the Arizona Cardinals but also secured a playoff berth for a side who could win the NFC West with a Seahawks loss this weekend.

Earlier, Carson Palmer threw for 310 yards and two touchdowns to Michael Floyd and John Brown but it was Chandler Catanzaro’s 47-yard field goal with less than 90 seconds remaining that gave Arizona (11-2) its seventh win in a row.

The Vikings (8-5) have now lost three of their last four but remain in the playoff hunt.
