Ireland to face Canada at Millennium Stadium in World Cup clash

The Canadians beat the US Eagles over two legs to confirm their spot at the 2015 showpiece event.

CANADA HAVE SECURED their spot at the 2015 Rugby World Cup and, in doing so, a Pool D clash with Ireland.

The Canadians will face Ireland on 19 September at the Cardiff venue after qualifying for the event as ‘Americas 1′. They became the first direct RWC qualifiers by defeating the US Eagles 40-20 on aggregate.

Having defeated the Americans 27-9 in the first leg, Canada were forced to eek out a second victory after falling behind to an early Taku Ngwenya try. James Pritchard’s try and penalty put them in front before Chris Wyles levelled matters.

The two-legged tie was settled on 60 minutes when Jason Marshall powered over for a try. Wyles tagged three points back but it was too little, too late. The final score in Toronto was 13-11.

Speaking post-match, Canada captain Aaron Carpenter declared, “It is an amazing feeling to know that we will be there proudly representing Canada at Rugby World Cup. It caps an incredible year with more test matches and Pacific Nations Cup inclusion and I am sure it will boost Rugby interest here. I am really proud of the guys.”

The US Eagles must now face Uruguay home and away for the right to claim the Americas 2 place.
