Camogie previews: Galway eyeing third All-Ireland final appearance in a row

‘Much will hinge on the performance of the Cork defence against a Galway forward line with Brenda Hanney and Martina Conroy in great form and Aislinn Connolly deadly from placed balls.’

Today

Cork v Galway, Nowlan Park, , 2.15pm

In 2010, Cork were bidding for three All-Ireland titles in a row before coming undone, at the semi-final stages to Galway, following a dramatic replay. The tables have now turned and today, Galway are bidding for their third All-Ireland final appearance in a row, in hot pursuit of an elusive  title but with a resurgent Cork side standing in their way.

Paudie Murray’s charges were beaten earlier this year by Galway in the round robin stages while Galway enjoyed a 100% record. Much will hinge on the performance of the Cork defence against a Galway forward line with Brenda Hanney and Martina Conroy in great form and Aislinn Connolly deadly from placed balls. Cork’s Jennifer O’Leary is one of the aces in their pack and along with Katrina Mackey, Anna Geary (defence) and Gemma O’Connor in midfield, Cork will pose serious questions of Galway.

Verdict: Galway

Wexford v Offaly, Nowlan Park, 4.15pm

Offaly are undoubtedly the story of the championship, scorching up the ranks from Premier Junior champions in 2009 to contesting an All Ireland senior semi-final in 2012. John Troy has moulded an energetic and determined side who face their greatest test yet, as they take on the current All-Ireland champions. Wexford will be wary of their Leinster counterparts while Offaly will relish a crack at the Model County. Huge performances will be required from Michaela Morkan and Elaine Dermody up front as well as Offaly centre back Lorraine Keena. Wexford’s greater experience and the potency of Ursula Jacob in the forwards and the commanding presence of Catherine O’Loughlin and Mary Leacy in defence should see JJ Doyle’s side through.

Verdict: Wexford

Tomorrow

Tipperary v Derry, Naomh Peregrine, Blakestown, 12.30pm (Intermediate)

Derry’s penchant for goals and Tipperary’s teak-tough defence has the makings for an intriguing encounter. The McGoldrick sisters, Meabh and Grainne are the lynchpins of a strong Derry side along with sharp-shooter Karen Kielt in corner forward. Tipperary will be relying on the impressive Anne Eviston at centre back, as well as Elaine Murphy and Brid Quinn up front.

Verdict: Derry.
