Good wins today for Galway, Dublin, Tipperary, Cork and Limerick

It was a busy day of league action around the country.

CHAMPIONS GALWAY RETAINED their perfect record in this year’s Division 1 camogie league hanks to a 1-13 to 1-8 defeat of Wexford in New Ross’s Kennedy Park.

The westerners have begun well under new manager Ollie Bergin and this fourth consecutive win puts them into the semi-finals in good heart.

The sides were level on 0-2 apiece after 10 minutes but if anything, Wexford had the better of those early exchanges, with Stacey Kehoe and the eye-catching newcomer Chloe Fox going close to grabbing goals.

Instead, Galway upped the ante considerably and scored an unanswered goal and seven points. Aoife Donohue was outstanding in scoring four points from play and she notched up the first two, before being fouled for a couple of frees converted by Aoife Callanan.

The crucial score arrived approaching half time as Mags D’Arcy brought down Donohue for a penalty, which was dispatched beyond the Wexford netminder with venom by Rebecca Hennelly, who is flourishing in her new centre-back role.

That made it 1-9 to 0-2 at the break and though Wexford posed more of a threat in the second half, with Fox landing four points, sub Deirdre Codd having a positive impact and Joanne Dillon coming off the bench to get a goal, there was no way back for the hosts.

Clare fell to a second loss on the trot to put their knockout place in doubt, while Dublin’s 0-12 to 0-10 success at Parnell Park continues their recovery after a bad start.

Chloe Morey had four points and Aoibheann Malone two as the home side led by two but Dublin scored the last four points to claim the honours.

Ali Twomey brought the teams level with two pointed frees and then added a 45 to put her side ahead. Orla Beagan tagged on another and the win was secured.

Tipperary are one of four teams in contention for the second qualifying place from Group 1 as a result of their second win on the trot. The Premier travelled to Drumcullen GAA and eked out a 2-9 to 1-9 victory over Offaly.

Jenny Grace and Sarah Fryday scored seven points between them and goals from Mairead Teehan and Megan Ryan earned the spoils.

Michaela Morkan kept Offaly in contention with six points and Arlene Watkins raised a green flag but the Faithful’s finest just could not peg Tipperary back.

In Group 2, All-Ireland champions Cork had far too much firepower for top tier newcomers Waterford, registering a 3-18 to 2-9 victory at Cork Camogie Grounds.

Orla Cotter scored seven points for the Leesiders, while Katrina Mackey slotted 1-4 and Amy O’Connor and Linda Collins added goals.

Beth Carton showed that she will have no difficulty in Division 1 by scoring 1-4 and Avril Power also shook the Cork net.

Limerick joined Cork at the top of the table on nine points with a 2-15 to 1-8 win over Derry. Kate McAnely scored 1-3 for the hosts but with Niamh Mulcahy hitting eight points and having six other scorers, Limerick had too much in hand.
