Ireland's O'Dowda finds form at key time with another big performance for Bristol

He chipped in with two assists as Bristol City beat Sunderland, while manager Lee Johnson singled him out afterwards.

IRELAND INTERNATIONAL CALLUM O’Dowda impressed yesterday as his side Bristol City beat Sunderland for the first time since 1992.

The 22-year-old played vital parts in both goals with two assists. The first was a corer which found the head of Bobby Reid in the first half, before he set up Milan Djuric for the winner on 73 minutes.

After scoring his first goal at the club against Crystal Palace midweek, O’Dowda looks to be hitting form at the perfect time with Ireland’s vital World Cup play-off clashes against Denmark fast approaching.

And Bristol manager Lee Johnson was more than content with the Kidlington-born winger.

“Yeah, it’s brilliant. Obviously Callum O’Dowda – as far as work rate and energy – has been brilliant since he’s been here,” he told the Bristol Post after yesterday’s win.

“But he’s been a bit frustrated by his lack of end product and to score midweek and to set up two today – he’ll be delighted with that.

“It’s something that we’ve worked on since the Burton game. Getting crosses in. We call that one the ‘come and head me in’ ball and it was almost like watching 20 years ago when Duncan Ferguson used to steam in at the far post.”

And Martin O’Neill’s right-hand man Roy Keane was reportedly at the Stadium of Light to see it all.
