• Andy Murray spent as little time as possible in the searing Melbourne heat, beating Joao Sousa 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 in 101 minutes.
• 2008 runner-up Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France beat Japan’s Go Soeda in straight sets 6-3, 7-6 (7-1), 6-3.
• In one of this year’s first thrillers, Gael Monfils came from two sets to one down to beat Lu Yen-hsun in five, 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 0-6, 6-1, 8-6.

In the women’s

• Easy peasy for top seed Victoria Azarenka who dropped just one game against Eleni Daniilidou winning 6-1, 6-0.
• After rolling her ankle on Tuesday, Serena Williams hit herself in the face with her racquet today but still beat Spanish teenager Garbine Muguruza 6-2, 6-0.
• The tennis-playing half of Team Wozzilroy, Caroline Wozniacki, beat Donna Vekic 6-1, 6-4 to move through to the third round.
• Laura Robson served up a late-night thriller as she shocked eighth seed Petra Kvitova 2-6, 6-3, 11-9.
