Bullet point briefing: what you missed on day 3 at the Australian Open

A little bit of history for Maria Sharapova and details of a “staggering comeback” for Britain’s brave Heather Watson — here’s your daily round-up from sunny Melbourne.

In the men’s

  • Defending champion Novak Djokovic was clinical, losing only eight points on his own serve as he beat Ryan Harrison of America 6-1, 6-2, 6-3.
  • David Ferrer dropped a set but the men’s fourth seed staved off an upset to beat “lucky loser” Tim Smyczek of America 6-0, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.
  • Tomas Berdych, seeded fifth, beat France’s Guillaume Rufin in straight sets 6-2, 6-2, 6-4.

In the women’s

  • Maria Sharapova was in scintillating form as she became the first person to have back-to-back “double bagel” wins at a Grand Slam since 1985. The second seed beat Japan’s Misaki Doi 6-0, 6-0 in 47 minutes.
  • Up next for the Russian is a headline clash against seven-time Grand Slam winner Venus Williams who beat Alize Cornet of France 6-3, 6-3.
  • Fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska progressed to the third round in straight sets, beating Irina-Camelia Begu 6-3, 6-3.
  • Australia’s Samantha Stosur said she “choked” as she crashed out in front of her home fans in a 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 defeat to Zheng Jie of China.

Your GB update from the Daily Mail

“A staggering comeback” says the Mail as Watson came from a set down and saved three match points to beat Ksenia Pervak of Kazakhstan.

Seed shocks

Stosur’s “choke” is the biggest shock on day three which also saw defeats for Mikhail Youzhny, the men’s 23rd seed, and Dominika Cibulkova, the women’s 15th seed.
