There’s such a thing as trying to be too clever.

THE TAMPA BAY Buccaneers had a bright idea for an unusual kick-off return.

But when they tried the play against San Francisco today, it ended in disaster — and a simple touchdown for the 49ers.

Bucs wide receiver Eric Page collected the kick-off in his own endzone and then tried to hand it off to Russell Shepard for a reverse.

It was meant to catch the opposition off-guard but it seems to have caught Shepard by surprise as well.

He fumbled the ball and Kendall Hunter had the rather simple task of scooping it up and diving two yards into the endzone.

The 49ers won 33-14.
