Bubba Watson holes out from bunker to force playoff and win $8.5 million

The American saw off Tim Clark in the playoff after both players finished one shot ahead of Graeme McDowell.

THERE WERE DRAMATIC scenes at the HSBC Champions event in Shanghai this morning as Bubba Watson managed to eagle the final hole to force a playoff with Tim Clark, which he then went on to win.

After leading for much of the week a final round 73 saw Graeme McDowell finish one shot behind the playoff group.

After bogeying the 16th and double bogeying the 17th the American needed an eagle at the final hole to catch Clark but his approach shot found the sand.

Despite all of the signs it wasn’t over yet for Bubba however as he stepped up to execute a sublime shot, even after being distracted by a camera.

The victory is Watson’s third of 2014 and he did not play down the difficulty of the shot on the last hole.

“It was such a tough bunker shot. You are not really thinking about making it, but I told my caddie it’s been a wild day, a wild couple of holes, but if we can make this it changes everything and it went in like a putt.”
