Whelahan: won two All-Irelands as a player. INPHO/Lorraine O'Sullivan

Brian Whelahan to be named Offaly hurling manager

Offaly’s selection committee have put the Birr legend forward for a two-year term.

OFFALY GREAT BRIAN Whelahan is set to be the next manager of the county’s senior hurlers.

The Faithful legend has been recommended for a two-year term by the county board selection committee.

Whelahan, 42, was part of the All-Ireland winning teams of 1994 and 1998 and holds the distinction of being the only modern-day hurler named on the Team of the Millennium.

He retired from inter-county hurling in 2006 but continued to play at club level for Birr.

Pauraic Boland, Tommy Byrne, Michael Coughlan and Paddy Scales have put forward Whelahan as the man to succeed Ollie Baker. Baker’s two-year term ended with defeat to Waterford in the qualifiers earlier this summer.

If he is half as good managing the team as he was playing, Offaly hurling is in safe hands! Beat Kilkenny on his own on 1998. One of the greats!

And he had the flu. Shows how rubbish that Kilkenny team was. They should never have beaten Waterford in the semi final. I’ll always remember that year as the All Ireland that got away from Waterford and we wouldn’t have had some great players ending their careers without All Ireland medals. Waterford could have won one before the great unsuccessful pursuit of an All Ireland even began. They probably would have had the confidence to go on and win one or two more.

Are you for real, ask anyone about 98 and they will say it was an All Ireland that got away from Clare if anyone!

Yea Clare were unlucky with what happened in the semi final. The two worst teams made the final. Waterford v Clare would have been a great final. I think Waterford would have won but I’m sure plenty of people will think Clare should have won.

Ground hurling is long gone, might have worked in the past when skill levels weren’t as high but not now

If Kilkenny continue their slide Offaly will have every chance of causing the first real shock of the 2014 Championship in Nowlan Park next June. No doubt the hurling world will rejoice again that the championship is wide open again then.
