BRIAN OโDRISCOLL BELIEVES an improvement in defence has Ireland on-track to make an impact at the 2019 Rugby World Cup.
After finishing second to England in the Six Nations this year, Joe Schmidtโs side rounded off 2017 with victories against South Africa, Fiji and Argentina in Dublin.
The victory over the Springboks was particularly impressive, as Ireland ran out 38-3 winners at the Aviva Stadium.
Ireland won their pool at the 2015 World Cup, but came unstuck in the quarter-finals against Argentina as the southern hemisphere dominated in England, and OโDriscoll believes the northern hemisphere may have more of a say in Japan.
OโDriscoll told Omnisport at the HSBC Cape Town 7s: โI think Ireland are in a really good spot at the moment, theyโre playing with a lot of confidence.
โTheyโve built and evolved a really good attack game. On top of that, what has impressed me most is what Andy Farrell has done with the defence.
โTheyโre happy defending for long periods of time having really good discipline, not giving up many tries, not giving up soft three points. I think itโs building well for two yearsโ time.โ
The legendary former centre added: โI think itโs always difficult to understand where the gap is between northern hemisphere and southern hemisphere, other than at a World Cup.
โThat said, I do think the northern hemisphere teams are showing really well, particularly the likes of Scotland, England have had some good victories even though theyโve been testing new combinations out.
โIreland have been impressive in blooding new players so I do think the northern hemisphere is well positioned.
โBut the ultimate barometer is World Cup time and two years ago it was four semi-finalists from the southern hemisphere, hopefully we can shake that up come Japan.โ

Delighted that Finlay is staying on. Great player and prop. He has a great future.
All 31 games, what a monster!!
They are a tight knit young group of players. Hopefully this might encourage one or two more to sign contract extensions, which could ripple through the team
One thing for sure the westies are going about their business in a very professional manner.
They seem to be focused both on the present and the future without doing any harm to either.
Best of luck to to them.
Great news, very young and has potential to improve even further, hopefully a sign of things to come regarding players signing new contracts
Excellent news, very good Tight Head whoโs key to Connachtโs success in the years to come.
Itโll also be an interesting competition between himself and Furlong over the coming years for Ireland.
I knew a relative of Finlayโs in Enniskillen. Gordon Ferris was a British heavyweight boxing champion in the 70s. There are some youtube clips of him boxing. Gordonโs father and Finlayโs granny were brother and sister.
