Brian McDermott in the running for Ireland job, admits John Delaney

The Leeds boss is one of three names Delaney fancies, he says.

FAI CHIEF EXECUTIVE John Delaney says Leeds United boss Brian McDermott is one of the managers he’s considering for the vacant Ireland job.

Giovanni Trapattoni vacated the position this morning — by mutual consent — after defeat to Austria last night.

“He’s a serious candidate and he is one of the names being mentioned here,” Delaney told BBC Radio Leeds earlier.

“I am looking at the names being mentioned and I think it will come down to the three leading the market.

“I am looking at Mick McCarthy and Brian McDermott and I know that both men, having spoken to them over the past couple of years, they would both like to get their hands on this job, not necessarily at this stage.

“I know Brian McDermott, given his heritage with his parents being Irish, and having spoken to him on Irish radio, he would love to manage the Republic of Ireland someday.”

The other name that makes up that trio, is Martin O’Neill; the former Aston Villa and Celtic boss is the bookies’ favourite.

McDermott took over at Elland Road towards the end of last season. He led Reading to promotion to the Premier League in his first full season in charge.
