Cork boss urges fans to support 'much-maligned' Goold after starring display against Tyrone

Brian Cuthbert believes the 27 year-old deserves support.

CORK FANS HAVE been urged to support โ€˜much-malignedโ€™ midfielder Fintan Goold in the wake of their qualification for the semi-finals of Division 1 of the football league.

Goold played a central role in yesterdayโ€™s drawn encounter against Tyrone as Cork gained parity at midfield with the Cavanagh brothers, Sean and Colm.

His performance received glowing praise afterwards from manager Brian Cuthbert, who believes it is time the Macroom man was given credit.

โ€œHonestly it would be remiss of me to go from this game and not say how delighted I am with Fintan Goold. I think heโ€™s a much-maligned player in Cork. Look at him there, he was our leader against Tyrone and played very, very well.

โ€œWhen the game was in the melting pot, I thought he drove us on big time. Heโ€™d a super game. I think Fintan is the full package, if the people of Cork would just back him and get behind him.โ€

The wave of Cork retirements last winter have created vacancies at midfield in particular with Alan Oโ€™Connor, Graham Canty and Pearse Oโ€™Neill no longer involved. Newcomer Ruairi Deane has been ruled out for the season with a cruciate injury while Aidan Walsh has been hampered by a hamstring problem.

Goold has stepped into the void and started at midfield in five of Corkโ€™s league games to date while he began at centre-back against Kildare. A vital block down to deny Sean Cavanagh a second-half goal yesterday was pinpointed by Cuthbert while the 27 year-old nearly grabbed a winner for Cork at the finish.

Brian Cuthbert near the end of the game Ryan Byrne / INPHO Ryan Byrne / INPHO / INPHO

โ€œHe made a great block down on Sean Cavanagh at the end to stop a goalโ€, remarked Cuthbert. โ€œWhen there was a block down like that in an All-Ireland final, we saw replays of it for months.

โ€œIt was a big plus for us to keep a clean sheet. After conceding four the last day, we were adamant we wouldnโ€™t concede a goal. We defended very well there. David Hanrahan made a great save as well.

โ€œFintan was also unlucky not to get the winning point. One of their defenders got a touch on it I think and it hit off somebody just as he kicked it.โ€

Hereโ€™s all seven goals from the Tipperary and Cork showdown in Thurles yesterday

Cork caught for draw by Tyrone but still book league semi-final place

We are all being unfair to the Dubs and. not recognising the dis-advantages their team has to try and win All Ireland titles. They only have a population of over 1 million to pick from, they are forced by the GAA to play ALL their championship games at home, their supporters have only to travel a few minutes to see their games and last year they only had a budget of 2 million euro to prepare their county teams. So be fair and give them a chance. Sam for the over populated hills in 2012.

Just a quick low down on the dubs for ye there lads donโ€™t ye run away with yourselves. Dublin beat a piss poor Kerry performance by the skin of their teeth last year. Dublin have no naturally gited footballers other than the Brogans and that is evident in that the second they drop the intensity they fall apart. We could all say ifโ€™s and butโ€™s but unfortunately for Dublin the history books donโ€™t accept those words as results! So, to save yourself embarrassment Iโ€™d let the Evening Herald analysis and headlines off, itโ€™ll only come back to bite you. As a die hard Cork fan, I am under no elusions. I still fear Kerry ten times more than Donegal or Dublin for that matter. I hate to admit it but thatโ€™s the fact. I am confident that should we get past Kildare and happen to meet Kerry we can do them but even I, a Cork man, with a more gifted team of players than Dublin by a mile, wouldnโ€™t be calling this decade the decade of the โ€œCorkiesโ€.

PS: Cork is a city too, everywhere outside of Dublin village is not a rural โ€œculchieโ€ area so leave off the dopey and tired ole guff that belongs between the fair weather, low iq fans in the Hill!

    Well wow diarmuid!
For a man who doesnโ€™t see Dublin as a threat you certainly spend alot of time analysing themโ€ฆ
I was in pairc ui chaoimh earlier this year with a considerable number of dubs and about 7 cork fans and all I saw corks โ€œnatural footballersโ€ do was hand pass the ball for 70 minutes.
Personally Iโ€™d be more worried about the dubs playing mayo than cork. I hope you lads beat Kerry personally because despite your clear arrogance thereโ€™s alot more of it in Kerry even if they do have some great footballers!
Ouch my head is killing me after typing this with my low iq and allโ€ฆ:)

@john clearly they remarks were directed at the culchie and decade of the dubs remarks. I have nothing but respect for the honest dub fan but even the most hardcore dub fan would admit that on match day at least half the hill would be doing well to even know what sport theyโ€™re watching. If you fear mayo more than cork, Iโ€™d question your judgement, given dub recent record against both.
