BRENDAN RODGERS DOES not expect there to be much transfer activity at Liverpool when the window opens for business on Saturday.
After agonisingly losing out on the Premier League title by just two points last season, Liverpool have found the going much tougher in the 2014-15 campaign.
With half of the season gone, Rodgers’ side have already lost seven matches and they will start 2015 against Leicester City on Thursday in eighth place — 18 points adrift of leaders Chelsea.
Rodgers was expected to try and bolster his squad in the transfer window, with a goalkeeper thought to be a top priority due to question marks over the quality and form of Simon Mignolet and Brad Jones.
However, the Northern Irishman does not believe that January is the right time to alter his team and stated he will only delve into the market if the right calibre of player becomes available.
“There won’t be much if any transfer activity from us during the transfer window,” Rodgers said on Wednesday.
I don’t think January is a good time to spend. I’m happy with how the group is progressing after a tough start to the season.
“If there’s something that can improve us, I’ll take that to the owners.”
Rodgers also expects Daniel Sturridge to make his long-awaited return to action by mid-to-late January.
The England striker has been limited to just three Premier League appearances this season – the last of which came at Tottenham in August. Sturridge was originally ruled out after sustaining a thigh injury when on international duty in September and has since suffered two setbacks in his recovery.
The 25-year-old has been undergoing treatment for the issue in Boston, but is set to return to Liverpool in the coming days to finalise his rehabilitation programme.
“He will be back here to finalise his rehab in early January,” Rodgers said. “He should be back playing mid-to-late January.”
That’s very sad news. Jimmy was a true gentleman who suffered outrageous unnecessary abuse after that 98 semi final. He endured it with great dignity despite the suffering it caused him and his family. All the Cooneys are the salt of the earth and genuine Irish gaels to their fingertips.
@Cluigin Deas: Agreed! Author could have used a better picture from his playing days.
Very sad news, deepest sympathies to a great gaa family on the loss of their beloved Jimmy.. A true Gael. RIP.
Rest in Peace, Jimmy. An excellent referee, the man made a genuine mistake in ‘98. He was a great player and person, that’s what he’ll be remembered for and rightly so.
Terribly sad news. Jimmy was the epitome of determination dedication and commitment. He was pivotal in making Sarsfields the successful club they are today. Never put in a poor display for club or county. Disappointing that the media have focused so much on his refereeing error, including photos of same. May God comfort his family and may his soul rest in peace.
He was a True Irish GAA Legend that gave everything for Galway, he will be remembered for his heroics, Dedication and Luck both on and off the football pitch. Respect
