Rodgers: produced the infamous envelopes on Being Liverpool. Joe Giddens/EMPICS Sport

Brendan Rodgers reveals what was written inside those three envelopes

Don’t get your hopes up.

IN BEING LIVERPOOL, the six-part documentary which followed the Anfield club through 2012 pre-season, new manager Brendan Rodgers famously produced three envelopes in a team meeting.

In the envelopes, Rodgers said, were the names of three players whom he knew would let him down over the course of the season.

The motivational stunt has since been a subject of constant speculation. Liverpool had a nightmare season last year so it’s far to say that plenty of players could be accused of letting the manager down.

But in an exclusive interview with ESPN FC (read it here), Rodgers has now revealed that there were no names inside the envelopes.

Zip. Zero. Zilch.

“Which names were in the envelopes?” I ask.

“There were no names,” he says with a wry chuckle. “There were no names.”

So in the end it’s just one big anti-climax — or is this a magnificent double-bluff?
