Brendan Maher named as new Tipperary hurling captain

Noel McGrath is the vice-captain for the Premier next season.

BRENDAN MAHER HAS tonight been confirmed as the Tipperary senior hurling captain for the 2014 season.

The 24 year-old was vice-captain this year for Eamonn O’Shea’s side and takes over the captaincy role from Shane McGrath.

It has also been announced that Noel McGrath, a member of this year’s county senior winning side Loughmore-Castleiney, will be the Tipperary vice-captain next season.

Borris-Ileigh club man Maher made his senior debut for Tipperary in the Waterford Crystal Cup 2009 and went on to establish himself in the side the season. The following season he captured All-Ireland senior and U21 hurling medals with the county.

Maher had previously won All-Ireland minor medals with Tipperary in 2006 and 2007, captaining the county to the latter success. He was an Allstar winner in 2010 and also won the Young Hurler of the Year award that season.

22 year-old McGrath will be the new vice-captain and has won All-Ireland medals at minor, senior and U21 as well. He was an Allstar winner in 2009 and 2010 while in 2009 he was crowned Young Hurler of the Year.
