Quigley, the Finn Valley boxer, was level with O’Neill [Paulstown] on 13-13 at the end of the bout but the countback went in is favour, 48-39.
John Joe Joyce [St Michael's Athy], who represented Ireland at Beijing 2008, also progressed to the semi-finals of the 69kg division after he upped the ante in the final round of his bout with Stephen Donnelly [All Saints].
Moylette’s return
European champion Ray Moylette [St Anne's] put recent injury frustrations behind him to outclass Patrick Mongan [Olympic] in the 64kg class.
Speaking to the Irish Amateur Boxing Association website after his bout, Moylette commented, “I was out for ten months with the hand injury and I’m delighted to be back here and winning. Hopefully, I can improve from this.” He added:
Everyone is talking about the World Championships, even the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, but my goal is right here at the Elite Championships.
There was another countback before the night’s action at the South Circular Road venue was complete.
Jimmy Sweeney [Drimnagh] was level with Steven Ward [Monkstown] at the final bell but the count, in which every individual hit is registered, went in Sweeney’s favour, 44-35.
