Box office: Leinster and Munster break TG4 rugby record

TG4 toast their biggest audience for a rugby game, hours after successful conclusion of International Rules Series.

LEINSTER MAY HAVE taken the points from arch-rivals Munster at the Aviva Stadium on Friday night – but TG4 can consider themselves winners too.

The Irish language station broadcast the much-anticipated meeting of the provinces at the Aviva Stadium in which the Blues ran out 24-19 victors.

And the coverage pulled in TG4′s highest audience ratings ever for a rugby match, according to the station.

Official figures show that 635,000 people tuned in over the course of the 80 minutes with the audience peaking at 338,000 viewers towards the end of the game.

It was, of course, a good Friday for the channel’s sports department with the game at Lansdowne Rd coming hours after Ireland beat Australia in Brisbane to take the International Rules Series. TG4 are heavily involved in the Series and broadcast both Tests this year.

The second clash reached an audience of 450,000  viewers with an audience share of 17%.
