Dortmund edge past Bayern to leave the Bundesliga with shock leaders

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored the only goal of “Der Klassiker”.

BORUSSIA DORTMUND DEFEATED champions and arch-rivals Bayern Munich 1-0 in a bad-tempered clash in “Der Klassiker” to leave upstarts RB Leipzig the shock Bundesliga leaders.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang prodded in on 11 minutes at Signal Iduna Park to propel Dortmund up to third on 21 points, three points behind Bayern.

But RB Leipzig are top, three points clear of the mighty Bayern, after their thrilling 3-2 win at Bayer Leverkusen on Friday.

Aubameyang guided Mario Gotze’s low cross past Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer to hand Dortmund an early lead.

Thomas Tuchal’s side were the dominant side throughout the first half and the goal gave them a deserved advantage at the break.

Bayern were much improved in the second half, but had minimal luck as Frank Ribery backheeled the ball into the net but it was flagged for offside, while Robert Lewandowski headed wide late on.

Xabi Alonso also came close when his curling effort hit the crossbar.

The result was Bayern’s first domestic defeat of the season, as Dortmund won for the first time at home against their rivals in the Bundesliga since April 2012.

Meanwhile, high-flying Cologne snatched a last-gasp 2-1 win at Borussia Monchengladbach. and Shalke continued their revival with a win at Wolfsburg.
