Bohs hit five to secure Dublin derby bragging rights

It took just over half-an-hour for the Gypsies to open up a 4-0 lead against the Saints.

AN INCREDIBLE FIRST-HALF performance from Bohemians saw them overcome Dublin rivals St Patrick’s Athletic in a 5-1 win at Dalymount Park this afternoon.

Bohs avenged their loss to Pat’s earlier in the season in impressive fashion, with goals from Jake Kelly, who netted a double, Roberto Lopes, Ismahil Akinade and Kurtis Byrne.

Keith Long was forced into a couple of changes from last week’s cup win over Galway, with Paddy Kavanagh injured and Aymen Ben Mohamed away on international duty. But Bohs’ didn’t miss star man Ben Mohamed as they made a dream start.

Their first came after three minutes when a free-kick from the right was flicked on by Kurtis Byrne, who found Dan Byrne. He was left completely free at the back post and had the time to pick out the onrushing Roberto Lopes, who turned in from six yards.

They then doubled their lead less than a minute later as Ismahil Akinade scored his first league goal of the season. Akinade powered his way past Lee Desmond who couldn’t deal with the Nigerian’s strength, and the Bohs striker took advantage of the gaping hole in the middle of the Saints’ defence to slide a low shot past Brendan Clarke from just inside the box.

The Gypsies were three up inside 15 minutes as the Pat’s defence were badly caught out again. Akinade turned provider as he found Jake Kelly sprinting into the acres of space afforded to him down the left wing to cut in clean through on Clarke, before calmly waiting for the Pat’s keeper to make a move and then slotting over him and into the net.

The visitors were seeing a lot of the ball and should have pulled one back four minutes later as Jamie McGrath came in from the left before his drive across goal was nearly turned in by the returning Christy Fagan, who had another chance moments later as he found himself behind the Bohs’ defence but Dean Delany easily saved with his feet.

There was no let-up from the hosts though and they made it four just past the half hour mark. Keith Buckley crossed in from the right to Akinade who towered above Sean Hoare and nodded towards goal, where Kelly scrambled the ball over the line despite the best efforts of Lee Desmond.

After the restart the tempo dropped as Bohs seemed content to sit on their lead. Pat’s did get a consolation with just over 10 minutes left as a Sam Verdon corner was headed in by the unmarked Ian Bermingham.

But Bohs restored their four-goal advantage within a minute. Akinade showed his power and pace again to out-muscle Sean Hoare before the defender’s woes for the afternoon were compounded as he saw red for hauling down the striker as the last man. Kurtis Byrne made no mistake from the spot as he smashed into the top corner, giving Clarke no chance.
