Wearen's wonder gives Bohemians share of the spoils against St Pat's

Mark Quigley opened the scoring for the Saints but the young Bohs midfielder answered back in emphatic style.

Bohemians 1-1 St Patrick’s

WITH BOHEMIANS CLAIMING five draws from nine games at home this season and St. Patrick’s Athletic drawing five out of nine on their travels in 2014, the result of this match seemed inevitable ahead of kick-off.

Unsurprisingly Liam Buckley selected his starting team with an eye on Wednesday’s tough Champions League opener away to Legia Warsaw. Buckley left a couple of his regulars on the bench including an in-form Christy Fagan.

Neither side covered themselves in glory in the first half. Both were guilty of coughing up possession too regularly and neither could find a good rhythm in their play. Bohemians got off to an energetic start, pressing the visitors high up the field which resulted in an excellent early chance.

Ken Oman and Lorcan Fitzgerald found themselves boxed into the corner after five minutes and gave the ball away to Kevin Devaney. The winger dribbled along the bye-line before firing it across the goal to an onrushing Paddy Kavanagh who should have least hit the target but blasted it high and wide. Five minutes later St. Pats were in front.

Right back Ger O’Brien found substitute Lee Lynch down the right hand side. Lynch and Conan Byrne played a double one two before Byrne found Mark Quigley free in the box. The striker’s neat finish from close range hit the top corner right in front of the travelling fans.

Bohemians best chances in the first half came from Kavanagh corners. Three in total were hit to Dinny Corcoran who failed to finish any of them and it was the men in the engine room who were left to manufacture the goal that levelled the match after half-an-hour.

The lively Roberto Lopes won possession in the opposition half before passing to Eoin Wearen a few yards outside the area. Wearen, who has been excellent of late, took a touch to place the ball on the edge of the box before curling it expertly inside Brendan Clarke’s left hand post

10 minutes before the half-time whistle Quigley tried something similar. Lynch teamed up with James Chambers and the latter set Quigley up but his curled effort drifted just over the bar.

Bohemians went on the attack straight from the restart and conjured up a couple of decent chances early in the second half. Devaney was the man causing problems again with his runs in off the right side.

The winger cut the ball back to Corcoran for the first chance of the half but the striker somehow manage to knock it over. Then in the 50th minute Devaney flew solo past two defenders before hitting his angled shot just wide of the far post.

The Inchicore side were very quiet for a large portion of the second half and after a period of dominance from the hosts they eventually got a sniff of goal. It came in the 76th minute from a throw-in. O’Brien played in Byrne who found space to run into in the box before slotting the ball just wide.

A couple of minutes later substitute Christy Fagan latched onto a ball from Chambers. The striker fell back but managed to get the header away. It looked like it might dip under the bar but somehow Dean Delany stretched to make the save.

Owen Heary followed the lead of his opposite number in throwing on a striker but neither front man got the chance to find a winner before the final whistle.
