WHAT’S RARE IS wonderful. Home wins at Dalymount Park are like hen’s teeth and despite some excellent performances this season, so are Steven Beattie goals.
Beattie and midfielder Eoin Wearen both hit goals which will have manager Owen Heary breathing a huge sigh of relief. The win though was soured by a horrible injury that saw Brian Lenihan stretchered off the field with 79 minutes on the clock.
It was the Leesiders who put all the pressure on in the opening five minutes with Billy Dennehy firing over from a free as well as having two corners that amounted to nothing. After that Bohemians took control, dominating possession while playing some really attractive football.
They fired a warning shot in the sixth minute. Left-back Anto Murphy slipped a nice pass through the Cork defence but Dinny Corcoran couldn’t latch onto it before goalkeeper Mark McNulty gathered safely.
Two minutes later Murphy struck one of those dangerous crosses that make a centre-half’s eyes water. The ball curled behind the back four and across the face of goal before Steven Beattie’s diving header at the far post slipped through the hands of McNulty.

Beattie lies injured on the ground after scoring for Bohs.
Unfortunately the striker, injured in the process, didn’t get to celebrate his first goal for the club as he received treatment. He was later to succumb to the injury midway through the second-half.
With 23 minutes on the clock Kevin Devaney was denied what would have been a goal of the season contender. He latched onto a ball from Murphy in the right corner of the box. The winger controlled it with his chest before unleashing a bullet of a volley that most likely left a dent in the crossbar. Beattie’s follow up shot was just wide.
Cork’s visits forays into the Bohemians’ half of the pitch were rare in the first-half and they managed just their second shot in the 42nd minute. Cillian Morrisson had a pop from the edge of the box but Dean Delany made an excellent save, tipping it over the bar.
It was a quiet start to the second-half with the first decent goal chance only coming 13 minutes after the break. It was a nice delivery from Kavanagh way out on the right flank. Dano Byrne was unmarked at the back post but the defender failed to get any power on the header.
Devaney got a second chance to double his team’s lead in the 67th minute. The nimble winger ran onto a Corcoran pass before cutting in off the flank. His shot flew well over the bar.
Then disaster struck for Cork City when Lenihan sustained a very nasty looking injury. The young midfielder rose over Pender for a high ball but landed very awkwardly from a good height. Lenihan didn’t move and looked unconscious as the Bohemians full-back went to check on him.
Lenihan is stretchered off the pitch before being brought to hospital.
He received lengthy treatment on the pitch from the St John’s Ambulance staff before being stretchered off in a neck brace. The ref would later play 13 minutes of additional time.
John Caulfield’s men looked shook after seeing their team mate stretchered off in such a distressed state and having used all of their substitutes, were reduced to ten men. The game looked done and dusted and it was just minutes later.
Eoin Wearen stabbed home the second from close range with just ten regulation minutes left to play. It came from a corner which the home side failed to clear. As it bobbled around the box, Wearen pounced to double the lead.
The visitors defended bravely right until the final whistle as Bohemians laid siege on their goal. Devaney, Kavanagh, Corcoran and substitute Jason Byrne were all guilty of missing chances to make it 3-0 on the night.
The sides meet again in a month’s time in the third round of the FAI Cup. Tonight’s win sees Bohemians leapfrog Derry City into sixth place in the table, the team they last won against at home.
