GARRY BUCKLEY SCORED the only goal of the game as Cork City defeated Bohemians at Dalymount Park to secure their second win of the season over the Gypsies.

Buckley tapped into an empty net two minutes after half-time to keep the Rebels in touch with leaders Dundalk who remain four points clear at the summit.

Coming into the game City were the form side as they had won four in a row and made no mistake in making it five. In contrast, it is now five games in a row without a win or a goal for Bohs’.

The home side did start the faster though as they seemed intent on ending their goal drought. They had an early opportunity as Paddy Kavanagh spotted Keith Buckley at the back post but instead of shooting he headed first time back across goal to Lorcan Pender but his chance of a shot was snuffed out by the quick reactions of the Cork defence.

John Caulfield’s men soon found their feet and were beginning to deal with the sodden conditions better than their hosts.

The Rebels were passing nicely out of defence and strung together some neat movements in an attempt to get Sean Maguire into the game.

Then seven minutes before the break the best chance of the opening period fell to Greg Bolger.

Karl Sheppard’s pace saw him easily outrace Derek Pender before his deflected cross from the left found its way to the onrushing Bolger’s whose powerful left-footed strike was just too close to Dean Delany who still had to get two strong hands to the shot to parry it away from danger.

The signs warning signs were there for Bohs’ from the end of the first period and two minutes after the resumption the Leesiders took the lead.

Gavan Holohan played a beautiful defence splitting pass down the inside right channel to Sean Maguire who cleverly checked his run to allow him steal a march on Dave Mulcahy before he squared to find the unmarked Buckley who turned the ball into an empty net.

Cork had a great chance to make it two 15 minutes from time as they found themselves three on two with Maguire gliding pass Mulcahy before he found Karl Sheppard who cut back onto his right foot but saw his shot blocked by Derek Prendergast.

The home side’s woes were then compounded 10 minutes from time as substitute Mark Quigley saw red after a rash challenge on Sheppard.

Jake Kelly nearly salvaged a point for the 10 men as he broke free in the area but he couldn’t break Bohs’ scoring duck as he shot narrowly wide of the post.
