Over 1.2m Irish viewers tune in to watch Germany win World Cup and wave Billo goodbye

RTÉ received an average audience of 857,000 during the final between Germany and Argentina.

RTÉ’s WORLD CUP final coverage peaked at a whopping 1,280,600 at one stage of Sunday’s tense affair between Germany and Argentina in Rio.

The state broadcaster enjoyed an audience average of 857,000 during what was host Bill O’Herlihy’s last show.

An RTÉ statement reads, “56% of viewers watching TV from 7.00-11.20pm last night were watching the coverage on RTÉ Two. The Final was the highest-rating match of the World Cup coverage on RTÉ Two.”

O’Herlihy signed off with two of his most famous catchphrases — “So, we’ll leave it there so. Okey doke. Good night and God bless.”
