McIlroy's club twirl and Willett at the Masters - 10 of the best golf shots of 2016

Not a bad selection this year.

WHEN IT COMES to the most memorable golf shots of the year, there is only one place to start.

2016 was well-stocked with moments of pure brilliance from exceptionally talented professionals who are raising the bar each and every year.

But we’re going to start at the top because Rory McIlroy is right up there.

He features a couple of times on this list — and if truth be told, we could have dedicated this entire article to him — but his second shot to the playoff hole at the finale of the Tour Championship stands out.

With the $10 million FedEx Cup bonus on the line, McIlroy saved his best golf until last during a nail-biting final round and then a playoff with Kevin Moore and Ryan Moore.

He absolutely stitched this glorious approach to leave himself a six-foot eagle putt for the victory — and the club twirl just completes it.

But it wouldn’t have been possible without this eagle on the 16th — a shot which has since been voted the PGA Tour’s finest of the year.

While we’re on the subject of McIlroy, let’s just watch his stunning second to the 18th at the K Club to seal his first Irish Open title over and over again.

Danny Willett also produced arguably his best golf for when it mattered most as he sensationally won the Masters back in April.

The Englishman’s tee-shot at the par three 16th at Augusta National just about sealed victory and the green jacket for him.

And how can we forget about DJ? After so many near misses, his time finally arrived and he was going to do it in style. This stunning approach on the 18th ensured there would be no slip-up this time at the US Open. Just look at the trajectory!

Any golfer will appreciate the difficulty of a bunker shot where you have to fly the ball over sand — but Brett Rumford showed us all how it’s done with this beautifully executed shot at the ISPS Handa Perth International.

Scott Hend was so far away from the hole that he didn’t even realise his ball had gone in.

This is great on so many levels. Little-known Will Wilcox understandably got a bit excited when he had a hole-in-one at the iconic island hole at The Players Championship. Just watch his reaction when it lands on the green and then the celebrations afterwards aren’t bad.

Scrambling at its finest from Jason Dufner. His tee-shot ended up on the rocks but he still managed a par after a delightful bump and run.

Speaking of a little bit of touch around the greens, this chip in at the Dean and Deluca Invitational on the PGA Tour from Jordan Spieth wasn’t half bad. He went on to win by three strokes after that birdie on the 17th.
