FEW FORMS OF media have exploded in recent years like podcasts. They are the perfect bite-sized complement to your morning commute or a particularly arduous gym session.
Given you are reading a sports website, I’ll assume that you like podcasts like The Guardian’s Football Podcast, Second Captains or the Bill Simmons Podcast.
They are all great listens but we thought we’d take a look around online to find some of the best health and fitness podcasts to aid you in your quest for a healthier lifestyle. Nobody wants to listen to someone lecture and preach about how you are doing things wrong; instead we tried to find fun podcasts that entertain while also giving helpful information about exercise, diet and everything in between.
Here are five that could be a worth a listen to.
The Jillian Michaels Show
If you’ve ever seen ‘The Biggest Loser’ then you will be familiar with Jillian Michaels, who often dispenses Gordon Ramsey-esque doses of vitriolic tough love in order to get her team working hard.
She doesn’t quite take such a combative approach on her podcast, The Jillian Michaels Show. Michaels talks with experts and friends about important fitness topics like diet, metabolism, health trends, new exercises and a whole lot more.
Greenfield is an Ironman triathlete, nutritionist and fitness coach but his greatest asset is in explaining new complex training techniques in ways that make them easy to apply in your own fitness plan. Greenfield gives great advice on losing weight, building muscle and even basic things like the best way to filter your water. Overall, just a very helpful podcast.
Ever heard of the Paleo diet? It means eating the types of food ate by the earliest humans (fish, meat, vegetables, fruit) and basically shunning everything else. That might seem drastic but there is a vocal section of the fitness community who strongly believe in it. This podcast from Abel James explains the nutritional benefits of the Paleo diet. He doesn’t come across as a crackpot… but maybe judge for yourself.
This is a great podcast for people who are stuck on the couch. Rich Roll only took up running at age 40 but now he is a seasoned ultra-marathon runner. What Roll does well is how he collects helpful information from experts that can really help people who are struggling early on with their fitness plan.
As you can probably guess, this podcast, hosted by Matt Frazier, is all about working out while maintaining a vegetarian diet. What makes this interesting is that it turns on its head a lot of what most people think about eating after the gym – mainly that steaks and other meats are important because of their high protein content. This is worth listening to if only to hear a knowledgeable alternative viewpoint.
