Club captain Petrov is in Villa Park this afternoon to say his farewells after announcing his retirement from football. The 33-year-old Bulgarian has been battling leukaemia since last year, and though the disease is in remission, he decided to hang up his boots earlier this week.
Benteke opened the scoring with this goal in the 14th minute and lifted his jersey to reveal a t-shirt which read “Petrov 19″.
However, on 56 minutes, he was sent off after receiving his second yellow card for a high challenge on John Terry.
Frank Lampard has since equalised to draw level with Bobby Tambling’s all-time record of 202 goals.
