BATE BORISOV FINALLY broke the deadlock in the 70th minute of tonight’s Champions League third round first leg qualifier against Dundalk in Belarus.

The SSE Airtricity League Premier Division champions had defended heroically to withstand an onslaught of BATE attacks throughout the evening, but it was an error which eventually provided the hosts with the opening.

Sean Gannon squandered possession when his pass was intercepted by former Arsenal and Barcelona midfielder Alexander Hleb, who had been introduced from the bench.

Hleb then played in another substitute, Mikhail Gordejchuk — who scored the winner for Belarus against Ireland at Turner’s Cross in May — and he managed to beat Gary Rogers at his near post.
