Two items from this crack-slipper of a tournament, however, came in one glorious match last night.
Fernando Rodney, the Dominican closer who plies his MLB trade with Tampa Bay, unveiled his lucky banana.
The plantain, sent from a family member back home, has been a lucky omen for the Dominicans. Speaking after his side’s 4-1 win over the Netherlands, Rodney said:
The banana said, ‘If you keep me close to you, you’re going to get the win.”
There was also the matter of this stunning catch from Marcos Sierra, which saw him hurtle headlong into the stands:
