'Pat's are favourites but we're not a rubbish side' - Barry Molloy

Derry City’s big man believes the Candystripes are an extremely difficult team to beat on their day.

DERRY CITY’S BARRY Molloy says that while St Patrick’s Athletic may be favourites to clinch the Ford FAI Cup on Sunday, his side don’t fear anyone.

The Saints finished 16 pints ahead of the Candystripes in third-place in the Premier Division and have been backed by many to end their 51-year drought in the competition.

Having narrowly missed out on Setanta Cup success this season, going down to Crusaders on penalties in the final, Derry are hell-bent on bringing some silverware back to the Brandywell in Declan Devine’s first season in charge and will be buoyed by the fact that they defeat Pat’s in the league two weeks ago.

Speaking to TheScore ahead of the meeting at Lansdowne Road on November 4, Molloy said:

“Pat’s are one of the top teams in the country football-wise. It’s going to be a very tough game but we know their strengths and we know how to get at them. We went out with a game plan last day and it went well for us, so we’ll be doing much the same.

We’re confident we can win the game. I’m sure Pat’s will be saying the same thing – they’ll be favourites no doubt about it, but on the day I wouldn’t be fearful of playing anyone.

“It’s not like we’re a rubbish side and they’re are overwhelming favourites but I’m sure they will be confident enough. We’re difficult to play against when we’re on form, though. Hopefully we can come out champions.

Molloy, who has experience of winning and losing an FAI Cup final having played in both 2006 and 2008, added that they can use to experience of coming so close to the Setanta Cup to their advantage at the Aviva.

“We’re very disappointed to have lost that one and it still sticks in the mind. We were probably favourites going into that game and we did so well to get there by beating Shamrock Rovers and Linfield along the way but we let ourselves down in the final.

So we have to remember that feeling and make sure that doesn’t happen again.”
