Bad news for Rebels as scans show Sheehan facing lengthy injury lay-off

Cork must plan without the influential forward as they prepare for a All-Ireland SFC qualifier.

CIARÁN SHEEHAN’S SEASON is over.

Cork GAA officials have confirmed that the Eire Óg man suffered a torn cruciate ligament during the three-point defeat to Munster rivals Kerry in Killarney yesterday. He was stretchered from the Fitzgerald Stadium pitch.

The Rebels’ manager Conor Counihan said afterwards: “It could be [a cruciate injury] for Ciarán, we don’t know. He’ll have a scan and then we’ll see. It’s a worry for us.”

That scan has confirmed Counihan’s fears.

A statement on the county’s website reads: “Following a scan today, it has been confirmed that Cork footballer Ciarán Sheehan suffered a torn cruciate ligament in the Munster Final defeat to Kerry on July 3rd.

“The news comes as a huge disappointment to the Cork team and management, and of course to Ciarán and his club, Éire Óg.

“All in Cork GAA wish him well in his recovery.”
