Back to her best? Serena Williams wins Madrid Open

The American registered 14 aces as she comprehensively beat Victoria Azarenka.

SERENA WILLIAMS HAS destroyed a limp Victoria Azarenka 6-1 6-3 to win the Madrid Open – her second title in successive tournaments.

The American’s triumph on the blue clay made it two from two for the ninth seed, who won the Family Circle Cup in Charleston in April.

Sunday’s final was defined by contrasting serving form with Azarenka double-faulting six times and Williams sending down 14 aces.

Australian Open champion Azarenka was broken in her first two service games allowing Williams to build a 4-0 lead in the first set.

The world number one’s fourth double-fault of the set handed Williams the first set 6-1.

Williams continued to dominate in the second set in Madrid winning 92 percent of points on her first serve, including 10 aces to easily win the title in just 64 minutes.

The 22-year-old Belarusian won just 19 percent of points when returning Williams’ serve.

Sunday’s result is huge for Williams in the lead-up to the French Open, especially after the 30-year-old also defeated world number two Maria Sharapova in the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open.
