And it was only when Marko Arnautovic’s cross snuck past goalkeeper Stanislav Namasco in the 75th minute that the hosts could breathe a sigh of relief, with substitute Martin Harnik adding a second in stoppage time.
The win leaves Austria in fourth place in Group D, level on points with Wales, and four behind Ireland and Serbia.
Austria’s next qualifier is against Ireland in Dublin on 11 June.
