TONIGHTโS AIRTRICITY LEAGUE First Division meeting between Waterford United and Athlone Town has been postponed.
The fixture was due to kick off at 19.45 in Waterford this evening, but at 17.45 the home side confirmed it would not go ahead.
The move comes after weeks of financial difficult for the midlands club, with players and staff being left short on wages prompting a fansโ group to organise a collection for Alan Matthewsโ squad last weekend.
The42 understands that Athlone players, by way of protest, decided not to board the bus travelling to the fixture. Athlone Town were unavailable for comment when contacted this evening.
โWe take this matter extremely seriously and will be charging Athlone for failing to fulfil the fixture and for bringing the game into disrepute,โ said Airtricity League director Fran Gavin.
โThis is totally unacceptable. To be notified on the afternoon of an SSE Airtricity League fixture that a club cannot field a team is simply not good enough. We will be meeting with Athlone Town over the weekend to discuss this serious matter.โ

Fran Gavin stated โI nearly dropped my glass of Champagne when I heard the news. The whole situation has put me right off my Lobster Dinner. What can we do, so far away in France!โ
Why does the guy in the picture have a football as a head
The lads are probably out on that big water slide on the Shannon
We are getting โฌ8 million for qualifying for Euroโs.The clubs should be given a cash injection from this money. What are the FAI playing at.We wonโt even mention the secret โฌ5 million from Blatter.
Heart breaking to see another club in trouble. Players stood up and who can blame them. Matthews must be wondering is it all worth it!?
4 years ago during Euros Monaghan Utd went out of business.
No doubt youโll have Delaney and Co. pished in a square somewhere in France, akin to the time Monaghan went bust and he was hammered drunk mixing it up with the zombie fans. Nothing will change until the while organisation is brought down from the top.
